…with research question permanently displayedĪs I’m writing up my PhD dissertation, I am continuously striving to streamline my writing process and simplify my writing environment. Should I still wish to see this outline as a mind map, I can export it into Freeplane, where each outline item would be a node, and each node would have a link that leads to the quote in CT, thus acting as a virtual dual-pane mind map/outliner. This is the process and mechanism that replaces the single Freeplane mind map with the previously described method. After having finished reading a chapter, I drag and drop all the newly created date topics into a CT outline file (.cto) I created for the whole book, and organise them into a hierarchical structure, thus recreating the underlying logical structure for the chapter’s argument (and gradually for the whole book).Add labels (tags) in the Categories section to characterise and categorise the quote.Add the page number for the PDF page link (to be able to go back to the source page with one click).Use yellow and pink colour to highlight any crucial sentences in the quote (optional).Add any comments, such as interpretations or ideas triggered by the quote.click “OK” to create new CT date topic.10:34 Smith 2013 definition of scientific method. ![]() The final topic title will look something like this: type a descriptive title for the quote.start typing author’s name and select phrase from PhraseExpander’s pop-up, e.g.click on the “add current date/time” icon in the “new topic” dialog box. Here is the sub-process for creating a new date topic in CT: ![]() I also set up a phrase with the “author date” format in PhraseExpander, so that when I create a new topic, I won’t need to retype that bit again. In the “Categories” I would include any labels (tags) that will pertain to all the notes within that particular chapter (including the chapter’s title and the author’s name). The template contains all the major fields of a reading note you’d expect, such headings for “Quote,” “My comment,” “Bibliographic reference,” link to page in the PDF file, and “Categories.” The reference is already marked up with CT’s “attribute” tags, which allows for automatically gathering topics with the same attributes. CT remembers the last template used, which means that whenever I create a new topic, I don’t need to worry about selecting the template again. a chapter), I create a dedicated template (a plain text document) for that section. Before starting to take notes for a section of the book (e.g. ![]() they are prefixed automatically with the date and time of the creation of the topic and allow the topics to be listed in chronological order in the “Topic list” pane. Date topics are CT documents with some special properties. I paste in the quote into a new “date topic” in CT.I copy and paste interesting passages into NoteTab (plain text editor) to fix the line breaks with CTRL+J and use CT’s markup to preserve formatting (mainly italics and superscript for footnotes), if required. Here is my process flow (when reading a book in PDF format): The main advantage of this latter process is that it results in bite-size chunks of texts that can be connected and reassembled in many other ways, thus providing more versatility and ease of use during the analysis and synthesis stage, and throughout the life the Zettelkasten. The main difference is that the earlier method with Freeplane produced one large mind map that contained all the reading notes in a single document and which tried to capture the inherent outline (logical hierarchy) of a book’s argument, while this new method produces many small index cards with quotes and notes, which nonetheless can be assembled into an overall outline at the end, to reproduce the overarching flow of the original text’s argument. Recently I have developed a reading note-taking process with ConnectedText that follows the Zettelkasten method more closely and is an alternative to the note-taking process with Freeplane that I have described earlier. ![]() But it was the loyal support of his ever-expanding fan base that really made this show the long-lasting benchmark which it is still considered to this day. This show catapulted Stretch into the spotlight as an important figure in the world of hip-hop, reflected in the many awards and citations he and his show have received. Once a week, beginning in the winter of 1990, the Stretch Armstrong Show broadcasted Stretchs 4 hour hip-hop mix, which featured new music from New Yorks best, as well as a mix of breakbeats, past classics, freestyles, not to mention his irreverent on-air antics with his co-host, Bobbito. Though it wasn’t till he landed a time-slot on Columbia Universitys WKCR (89.9FM) that things really heated up on a much grander scale. Also, shout out to the good peoples at for supplying me and the rest of the Stretch & Bob fiends with hundreds of old tapes. I've got a ton of these old recordings, and it was really difficult to decide what to include/exclude, but hopefully, you'll get a sense of their legendary show and the evolution of classic hip-hop over a legendary eight-year period. I even threw in some of my favorite freestyles and exclusives, which were taken directly from old cassettes. All of these tracks were played on WKCR at least once (some more than others). I compiled all the tracks to make it seem like you're listening to an actual taping of the show. What I did with this mix was try to showcase some of the joints that were spun on their show beginning in 1990 and ending in 1998. Since I was too young during the show's heyday, I've had to feed my addiction for this show by scouring the internets for uploaded tapes from listeners from back in the day. Their show was responsible for launching the careers of Nas, Mobb Deep, Big L, Jay-Z, Big Pun, Fat Joe, The Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest, The Beatnuts, Black Moon, Redman, The Wu-Tang Clan, and the list goes on and on. I'm not gonna go into a long history regarding their show on WKCR, but from 1990 - 1998, during the hours of 1-5 AM every Thursday night / Friday morning, these two, for lack of a better term, "smashed the airwaves" of the New York metropolitan area. ![]() And DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia (AKA Cool Bob Love, AKA DJ Cucumber Slice, AKA the ten thousand other nicknames this dude has) were probably two of the most influential people in the game at that time. You'll see a 3D battlefield with your units on it, and it's up to you to maneuver them and select the right tactics to prevail over your enemies. When it comes down to a fight, the game switches to real-time tactical mode. So inevitably in Imperial Glory, there will come a time when you do have to battle it out, on both land and sea. Turn down an opportunity to form a defensive alliance and the nation offering may take offense.Īs the great Prussian strategist Clauswitz noted, though, war is the continuation of politics by other means. That's important, because your nation's reputation varies, depending on your relationship with a particular foreign power. You can also try to repair or improve your relations with other nations by building consulates and newspaper offices abroad to try to generate sympathy with them, as well as with other foreign nations. So Imperial Glory will let you form coalitions and defensive alliances, request rights of passage, form commercial treaties, and more. The nations of the era were in a constant balancing act as they allied with one another to counter the growing power of their rivals. Russell Crowe isn't in sight, but don't let that keep you from shouting, 'Huzzah!'Īnd, of course, you really can't make a game about this era without having some kind of robust diplomacy system. But doing so will triple your research production for a year, which represents the scientific significance of discovering that historically important item. Meanwhile, the Rosetta stone quest requires you to build up a light infantry and naval force and then link a sea route to Alexandria, Egypt. For example, the medical revolution quest means that building up to a certain population will let you build hospitals in all your territories at no cost. They represent significant achievements of the era, and by accomplishing quests, you can earn a significant reward. Quests are sort of like the great wonders of the Civilization games. Like in the Civilization games, you can pick which technology to research next, so there are strategic decisions to be made as to whether to focus more on industrial technologies to boost production by unlocking new buildings (which lets you build ships, buildings, and units faster) or military technologies to build more-powerful units.Īnother interesting new feature is quests, which are unlocked when you reach certain milestones, such as by researching a new technology. For one, you can actively research new technologies on a tech tree. To its credit, the developers at Pyro Studios are throwing some intriguing new ideas and concepts into the Total War-like formula. Each turn represents one month, and after 12 months, the game displays a progress report, ranking where your nation is among its competitors. Unit and ship counters look like miniature brass replicas, as if you're actually the leader of your country moving pieces around the map. Europe is divided into provinces, each of which has ratings for food production, population, and resource production, all of which have useful aspects throughout the game. From here, you'll manage production, move armies and fleets around, engage in trade and diplomacy, and more. You will then play the strategic portion of the game while looking over a map of Europe, which isn't too unlike the map seen in Medieval: Total War, and sort of like a complex game of Risk. Imperial Glory will let you take control of one of five principal powers of the time: France, Britain, Austria, Prussia, or Russia. Imperial Glory will let you indulge your Napoleonic complex. This has always been a fascinating era in history, with the rise of the nation state, nationalism, and the dawns of the scientific and industrial revolutions, and judging from our time spent with a preview of the game, it appears developer Pyro Studios is taking that all into account. Like Medieval: Total War, Imperial Glory will let you try to take over Europe by alternating you between a turn-based strategic map and real-time battles. You'd be forgiven if you mistook Imperial Glory for something like Napoleon: Total War, because there certainly appears to be quite a bit of Creative Assembly's acclaimed strategy series in this Napoleonic-era strategy game. ![]() It is believed that this practice continued right through into the 9th century. Throughout Ancient Rome there is also evidence of soldiers as well as arms manufacturers getting tattoos. ![]() Evidence shows the use of the verb ‘stizein’, which means to prick when referring to tattooing in their ancient literature. Criminals, prisoners of war, and slaves would be branded with their status.Ī famous example of the use of tattoos by the Ancient Greeks was the Athenians tattooing owls onto the Samians after defeating them. Tattoos during this era in Greece and Rome were used mainly on the outcasts of society. Written records provide evidence of tattooing from the 5th century BCE in Greece. Unfortunately, those who are unable to endure the pain can be branded with the mark of shame on their skin forever. These tattoos are extremely painful to receive and the procedure comes with a great risk of infection. Once complete, the tattoos represent and celebrate dedication to the culture and great endurance. Tattooing ceremonies are generally held to mark a younger chief’s ascension to a leadership role within society. The process of receiving traditional tattoos takes many weeks to complete. The tool used to give the tattoos is handmade, from turtle shell and boar’s teeth. The skill is taught and passed down from father to son. The techniques and tools used for this traditional practice have hardly changed during this time either. The tradition of giving and receiving tattoos by hand in Samoa has been practiced for more than two thousand years. It is even believed that the modern-day English word ‘tattoo’ may have originated from the Samoan word for tattoo ‘tatau’. The history of tattooing in Samoa is a great example of how tattoos can form an integral part of social culture. Tattooing has formed a part of Samoan cultural traditions for thousands of years. This practice changed, however, during the Meroitic period, between 300 BC and 400 CE, when Nubian men received tattoos. This theory is supported by the fact that there is little to no evidence, either physical or artistic, that tattooing was commonly performed on men. Another interesting discovery about tattooing from ancient Egypt is that it appears this practice was only carried out on the skin of women. His examination of the different scars found on the mummified body of the priestess, Hathor, suggests that the markings could have been a treatment for pelvic peritonitis. Research by Daniel Fouquet suggests that, in ancient Egypt, tattoos may have even been performed as a medical treatment. Some theories indicate that the tattoos found on the mummies were for decorative purposes. There have been discoveries of tattooed mummies from ancient Egypt, which suggest that the practice here dates back to at least 2000 BC. This tattoo was used to warn other members of society that this person could not be trusted. It is also thought to have been fairly common for convicted criminals to be branded with a tattoo on their face. Let’s take a closer look at some of these civilizations and some theories about why they used to tattoo themselves.Īncient Chinese literature refers to folk heroes and bandits as having tattoos. These theories reflect the location and the cultures of the civilizations themselves. Ancient and Traditional PracticesĪs the first tattoos date back to ancient civilizations, the reasons behind the newly-seen skin tattoos are fuelled by different theories. All of these discoveries link to different periods of time throughout ancient history. Locations where tattooing practices have been recorded on human remains, include: Alaska, Mongolia, Greenland, Egypt, China, Sudan, Russia, and the Philippines. There is evidence of this from over 49 different locations around the world, where tattooed mummies and remains have been discovered. While Otzi may be evidence of the first tattoos known to mankind, other eras and ages throughout history reveal a long and rich history of tattooing. Close examination of the markings on the mummy indicate that soot or fireplace ash were used to create the tattoos. Otzi’s body has a total of 61 tattoos in various different locations, with the majority of these ink inscriptions located on his legs. ![]() XAMPP 8.1.6 Install an Apache web server and add MySQL, PHP and Perl with ease. Six out of 10.Īndrew Bergman should have won an academy award for this screen play. But it's Burns fans will be in Heaven, as the veteran star lights up the screen whenever he's around. Wass actually delivers a very appealing and sympathetic performance, and naturally one actually cares about whether his rock star will be redeemed. Silver is especially funny as a music industry insider. A top notch cast brings to life a variety of colourful characters: Ron Silver, Eugene Roche, James Cromwell, Robert Picardo, Robert Desiderio, John Doolittle, Jason Wingreen, Susan Peretz, Arthur Malet, etc. He's a joy, although it is interesting that "Oh, God! You Devil" is played more straight, and for more pathos, than one might expect. It only really comes to life the more that that old fountain of youth Burns is exploited for his full comic potential. Written by Andrew Bergman, this third entry in the series doesn't contain a lot of comedy fireworks. God and Satan ultimately have a show-down poker game in Vegas as they fight for Bobbys' soul. But Bobby is not happy, because this also means saying goodbye to to the great love of his life, Wendy Shelton (Roxanne Hart). In no time, Bobby is having great success. Old Scratch, passing himself off as a super talent agent, gives aspiring musician Bobby Shelton (Ted Wass) a real Devils' deal. You can tell that George Burns is really enjoying himself immensely, here: he gets to play not only his signature role of God, but the Devil as well. We still miss you here on earth and need you now more then ever. God bless you Mister Burns, I hope you and Gracie are having a wonderful time in Heaven. What a wonderful message! This is a great film and George Burns is what makes it that way. The singer in this film wanted fame and glory and yet in the end he found happiness in a simple life with his loving wife and child. We as a society need more films like this with a positive message about God. He said he was wonderful and so good to the cast and crew and kept them laughing with wonderful stories about his life. He wrote me back and said that the few days he worked with George were among the happiest of his life. He has a small role in the film and I wrote to him several years ago and asked him what it was like working with George Burns. ![]() Jason Wingreen is a well-respected character actor (he was on All In The Family and Archie Bunker's place). He is just so wonderful as God that I can't think of any other actor who could have done it as well as he (do you realize that in the original Oh God! they wanted Mel Brooks to do it?!). Once again, George makes movie magic and makes you believe. We can actually see George walking behind "himself" as God! Movie technology has come such a long way. There is a wonderful bit of technology when we see the two "Georges" fighting for this man's soul in the end. ![]() A rock star who is willing to sell his soul for success. The plot sort of reminds me of The Devil And Daniel Webster with Ted Wass's character as a sort of modern day Jabez Stone. What an original idea! I know that people who loved George couldn't picture him playing a role of evil, but he does it very well. Once again, George Burns plays the Almighty but he also plays a dual role as the Devil himself. This was the second sequel to "Oh God" (they had planned a third, but it never was made). The beauty of adapting an already successful game is boundless. My most able coders were able to add a score for every time the main character successfully traversed the barricade, sound for encouragement, relevant World War II effects and background, and a dramatic, “Game over” effect at the end. Others replaced their main character with text such as, “Oh no. For some, there was a death march song and the spitfire spinning before turning bright red and then becoming invisible. My students use an “if” the “main character” “touches” the “barricade” series of blocks and then their imaginations took over. Now we simply needed to code our main character to do something dramatic if it touched the barricade. Step 3: Program drama elements with sound and visuals To randomize the gap in the middle, we added a “random” block in the y coordinates for the barricade. Now students had the impression of a continuous stream of barricades moving across the screen. ![]() ![]() Placing a repeat loop around these instructions. Students suggested several different ways of managing the next step but we settled on this process:Įntering coordinates to take it back to the left-hand side of the screen before setting invisibility back to 0 percent. This caused the barricade to move across the screen but it then came to a halt on the far left, which was no good to us as we wanted a continuous succession of barricades for our main character to fly through. Students used a series of emojis with a gap in the middle and then rotated it 90 degrees and inserted it on the far right of their screens.Ĭoding it to travel across the screen was a simple matter of using a “move” block and entering coordinates at the far left of the screen. Next step was to create something moving across the screen, with a gap for the main character to navigate through. This gave a small jump and students experimented with different numbers until they achieved the desired effect. If the main character was tapped, we changed y by +2. Now we started to tackle the problem of how to stop our character from its perennial descent and added an “if” block. Step 1: Choose a character and make it moveįirst, we chose an image to be the main character and inserted at the center of the screen.Īs a class, we discussed how we would make the main character continuously sink and realized this was a simple case of coding the character to move a negative number of pixels on the y axis and then ensuring this was in a repeat loop. I am using generic instructions rather than instructions specific to Hopscotch so the lesson can be taught using any platform. These were the steps we used to code the game. It's a perfect fit for addressing the ISTE Innovative Designer Standard! In the project they analyzed an already successful app, decomposed the coding behind the game, recreated it and then adapted it - all the while, debugging when problems occurred. ![]() ![]() Instead of pipes, my game had Messerschmitt fighter pilots and the player’s role was to keep the spitfire in the air by tapping the screen and navigating it through the enemy aircraft.īringing this work into the classroom was so much fun and the children were fully engaged throughout. Using all the same coding elements as Flappy Bird, but with a spitfire plane instead of a bird. At that time, we were about to embark on our World War II unit, and throwing a chubby bird into the mix would have jarred in its irrelevancy.Īnd so, I created a game that I called Flappy Spitfire. Obviously, I wanted to facilitate creativity and for my students to use new skills to create a game that was relevant to other learning in the class. Initially, I felt quite chuffed about recreating a viral game, but as an educator, I knew that I didn’t want my children simply copying a game that was already in existence. The coding behind the game is basic, and whether using Scratch, Hopscotch, KODU, Tynker or the myriad of other apps and coding software, the game can be replicated. I am, of course, referring to Flappy Bird. Watching my children tapping away on screens to support an aerodynamically repressed bird remain afloat and navigate its way through a series of pipes, it occurred to me that an extraordinarily simple game had taken the world by storm.
